What is required before I can enroll in a

"new driver" training program?

Students must:
  • Be 15 years old by the third classroom session
  • Have parent or legal guardian consent if under 18

How do I get a permit?

The state Department of Licensing allows you to receive an instructional driving permit at age 15-1/2 or older, if you pass the state knowledge test. We offer this test daily, call us at 206-207-5555 to schedule an appointment. Once you pass the knowledge test, you can apply with the DOL to get a permit, online or in person.

ALTERNATIVELY, if you are enrolled at a driving school, you can receive the permit on your 15th birthday or later. The driving school will electronically authorize a "permit waiver" for you in the Department of Licensing's computer system. This permit waiver exempts you from taking the knowledge test to get your permit (you still have to pass the knowledge test before getting your license, however).

When you enroll in driver's ed with us, we'll send you complete information on this process.

The soonest you can get a permit with the waiver system is within 10 days of the start of the driving school class you enrolled in.

For driver's ed, what do I need to do at

the Department of Licensing?

Before beginning driving lessons, you will need to go do the Department of Licensing to get your learner's permit. I-5 Driving School will provide your permit waiver electronically. When you register with us, we will provide you with all the details on how to get your permit waiver.

Here's what to bring to the DOL:

  • Parent or guardian
  • Original birth certificate or passport
  • Social Security number (card not required)
  • Glasses or contact lenses, if you wear them, for the vision test
  • $25 in cash or check for the permit

You won't have to take a written test to get the permit if you are registered with us, but you will need to take the vision test.

You can find a DOL location (and wait times) at the following website: https://fortress.wa.gov/dol/dolprod/dsdoffices/

What does it take to complete the

driver training program?

To receive the Traffic Safety Education Certificate of Completion, you must:

  • Attend 17 classroom sessions (2 hours each)
  • Attend at least five 1-hour behind-the-wheel driving sessions
  • Attend one behind-the-wheel observation session (1 hour)
  • Receive a passing score of 80% or better on the course final exam
  • Receive a passing score on the course skills review

What are your payment policies for exams?

For a state written or driving test, you don't have to prepay for the test. You can simply pay when you arrive. However, if you don't show up for two appointments, we will only accept new appointments from you if they are prepaid. This means you will need to pay for the test at the time you make the appointment.

If you need to change or cancel your prepaid appointment, you must give us at least 24 hours notice of the change, or your prepayment is forfeited.

What are your payment policies for tuition?

To reserve a spot in a driver's ed course, a $99 deposit is required. This deposit is fully refundable up until 72 hours prior to the first classroom session. Within 72 hours and up to the start of the first classroom session, you may transfer the deposit one time to a different classroom session or to the "To Be Determined" list.

If you do not show up on the first day of class or notify us that you will not attend the course once the class has begun, your deposit is forfeited. Please don't let this happen!

What are your payment policies for lessons?

We require prepayment for driving lessons. If you need to cancel or reschedule a driving lesson, you must let us know with at least 24 hours notice, or it is subject to a $40 rescheduling fee. If you don't show up to the driving lesson or cancel late, there is a $40 fee which is deducted from your prepayment. We really prefer to never have to do this, so please reach out if you think you cannot attend your appointment.
